At-Home Teeth Whitening: Does it Work?

I have always been an avid teeth whitener. You name it, I’ve probably used it. From whitening strips to actual whitening procedures at the dentist office, I’ve done everything under the sun to get a pearly white smile. Throughout the years of my whitening journey, I was a morning coffee drinker, a big fan of pop products and a red wine lover. I never thought twice about drinking any of those acidic liquids. Over time, I noticed my teeth getting more dull and yellow. So what would I do? Run to the nearest drugstore to pick up another pack of whitening strips. I used them so often and so frequently, that my teeth began to hurt.  So much so that I had to stop using them all-together and my teeth again became more dull and discolored. So when I was asked to collaborate with Smile Brilliant, I jumped at the chance!

Smile Brilliant is unique to each person’s set of teeth because unlike most at-home whitening kits, you create your very own mold of your teeth. I think it definitely helps having a mold of your teeth because the whitening hits every crack and crevice in your mouth. (After all, who wants to have tiger striped teeth?!) This mold is sent into the Smile Brilliant lab where they then create an upper and lower tray that fit your teeth to a T! The mold is extremely easy to make by mixing the base and catalyst together to form a paste to be put into the mold.  I felt like a kid doing a super cool science experiment because as you mix the two together, the color changes! Pop the mold it in your mouth, wait for it to harden (about 3 minutes) and then send it directly into the lab in the self-addressed stamped envelope provided! Easy as 1, 2, 3. What you don’t see in this photo are my kids running around screaming for a snack lol. I can literally gel these and pop them in super quick and go about my day!

Once you get the custom fitted trays back from the lab, you can start whitening immediately, which of course I did! Inside the kit there are syringes of both whitening gel and desensitizing gel (which in my experience, was a teeth-saver!).  All that you need to do is place a thin strip of the whitening gel on the top of the teeth trays and put them in your mouth to begin whitening. Depending on the sensitivity of your teeth and how much they need whitened, you can whiten for 1 hour to 3 hours. And the best part of all is you can whiten while you literally do anything!  I whitened while doing laundry (most of the time), watching tv, playing with my kids, and even blogging! Because of my sensitivity, I would normally do an hour of the whitening gel and then right after use the desensitizing gel for 15-20 minutes. The desensitizing gel was almost like a cooling gel, I could tell it really helped my teeth from throbbing!

Drum roll please…….here are the before and after photos of my whitening process with Smile Brilliant! I didn’t notice a hugely dramatic difference because my teeth were pretty white to begin with. However, the spots that were dull and discolored definitely aren’t anymore and my teeth now look more “crisp” white, if that’s even a thing 😉
